What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic injury to the brain that alters brain functions. It is considered a mild form of traumatic brain injury, or mTBI. Traumatic brain injury is an insult to the brain caused by an external physical force that results in an impairment of cognitive abilities or physical functioning. Traumatic brain injuries range in severity, and although concussion is considered a mild form, it can still lead to unrelenting, disabling symptoms. While concussions can affect patients of all ages, children and adolescents are most often affected. Recent studies have shown that as many as 69% of children that had suffered a concussion had post-concussive visual symptoms.

What Are The Visual Symptoms?

Blurred Vision

Sensitivity to Light

Difficulty Reading

Double Vision

Difficulty Tolerating Movement in Peripheral Vision, Such as in a Moving Vehicle

Headaches with Visual Tasks

Difficulties with Eye Movements

Problems with Depth Perception

Inability to Maintain Visual Focus

How Can We Help?

Dr. Jill McAdams, our optometrist who leads our team in caring for our traumatic brain injury patients, will evaluate your visual symptoms, and perform various tests to evaluate your visual skills. These visual skills include, but are not limited to, focusing, eye coordination, object tracking, eye alignment, depth perception, and overall eye health. Pending the results of your evaluation, Dr. McAdams will design a treatment program customized to fit your needs based on how your symptoms interfere with your daily routine, and the causative injury. To schedule a consultation, please call 215-256-6735.
