What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film, and accompanied by ocular symptoms, in which tear film instability and hyperosmolarity, ocular surface inflammation and damage, and neurosensory abnormalities play etiological roles (International Dry Eye Workshop 2017 Definition).

What Are The Symptoms?

    • Burning/Stinging/Redness
    • Foreign Body Sensation
    • Gritty/Sandy Sensation
    • Blurred Vision
    • Tearing
    • Contact Lens Intolerance

What Causes Dry Eye?

Our tear film is composed of two main layers, an outer lipid layer and an underlying aqueous layer.  The aqueous layer serves to keep our ocular surface hydrated, while the lipid layer stabilizes our tear film, preventing it from evaporating too quickly.  Our lacrimal glands produce the aqueous layer, while our meibomian glands produce the lipid layer. Studies have shown that 86% of dry eye is due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), and 14% is aqueous deficient.

How Can We Help?

Our doctors will perform a comprehensive dry eye evaluation to test the chemistry and volume of your tears. Once we determine the cause of your dry eye, we can offer a personalized treatment regiment tailored to relieving your symptoms. At Your Eye Associates, we offer the latest technology in the evaluation and treatment of dry eye, including LipiFlow, the only FDA approved treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.
