Dry Eye

FOUR SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA LOCATIONS

Clearer, more comfortable eyes start with finding the cause.

Dry eye is not one-size-fits-all. At Eye Associates, we evaluate your tear film, eyelids, meibomian glands and ocular surface, then build a treatment plan around what is actually driving your symptoms.

DRY EYE SYMPTOMS

Burning, watering and blurry vision may share the same source.

Dry eye disease develops when the eyes do not make enough tears, the tears evaporate too quickly, or the layers of the tear film do not work together properly. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) - poor function of the oil glands along the eyelids - is a common contributor to evaporative dry eye.

  • Burning or stinging

  • Fluctuating vision

  • Gritty sensation

  • Contact lens discomfort

  • Watery eyes

  • Redness

  • Light sensitivity

  • Eye fatigue

A ROOT-CAUSE APPROACH

A better plan begins with a better evaluation.

Symptoms alone do not reveal whether the main problem is tear production, evaporation, inflammation, gland obstruction, eyelid factors or ocular surface damage. Our doctors assess the pattern of your symptoms together with clinical findings to recommend an appropriate sequence of care.

Your plan may combine at-home care, medication and in-office therapy. It can also change over time as the ocular surface improves or maintenance needs become clearer.

YOUR EVALUATION MAY CONSIDER
  • Tear-film stability and quality

  • Meibomian gland structure and function

  • Eyelid position, closure and blink quality

  • Inflammation and ocular surface staining

  • Medication, health and environmental contributors

  • Visual demands and contact lens wear

THE CARE PATH

01 · IDENTIFY

Determine the major contributors to your symptoms.

02 · PERSONALIZE

Match treatment intensity and technology to your findings.

03 · MAINTAIN

Monitor comfort, vision and gland health over time.

DRY EYE TREATMENT OPTIONS

Care that ranges from everyday support to advanced therapy.

Not every patient needs every treatment. Recommendations depend on examination findings, goals, health history and response to prior care.

SUPPORTIVE AND SPECIALTY CARE

Artificial Tears

Lubricating drops can supplement the tear film. Preservative-free options may be preferred when drops are used frequently or the ocular surface is sensitive.

Warm Compresses

Consistent, properly performed heat therapy may soften thickened oils and support meibomian gland function.

Prescription Eye Drops

Depending on the diagnosis, prescription therapy may help
address inflammation, tear production or other contributors to dry eye.

Punctal Plugs

Tiny biocompatible inserts placed in the tear drains can help keep natural and supplemental tears on the eye longer in selected patients.

Amniotic Membranes

A biologic tissue covering may be used temporarily to protect and support healing of a significantly compromised ocular surface.

Scleral Contact Lenses

Custom lenses vault the cornea and hold a fluid reservoir over its surface, which can improve comfort and vision in advanced or complex cases.

IN-OFFICE TECHNOLOGY

Target the eyelids, glands and inflammation.

Eye Associates offers several technology-based options. Your doctor will recommend a treatment or combination only when the findings support it.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Controlled pulses of light applied to the skin around the eyes may help reduce inflammatory contributors and improve meibomian gland function in appropriate patients.

Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

Photobiomodulation uses targeted light energy and may be incorporated to support eyelid gland function and reduce inflammation.

LipiFlow

Thermal pulsation applies controlled heat to the inner eyelids and gentle pressure externally to evacuate obstructed meibomian glands.

Radio Frequency (RF)

Controlled radio-frequency energy warms eyelid tissues and may help address thickened gland secretions and certain eyelid-related contributors.
